Age Concern CEO stole £700,00 from the charity, court hears

FORMER Age Concern chief executive John Briers is accused of stealing over £700,000 from the charity.

The 57-year-old is said to have pocketed the vast amounts by paying cheques into his account and rewarding himself bonuses.

Newcastle Crown Court was told 60 cheques were paid out, including 12 unauthorised bonuses and 19 pension top-ups.

Briers did not comment during the police interview and claimed the payments were diverted to his account so he could pay suppliers in cash.

The trial continues.
