Attempt to beat world’s longest relay handshake for Surrey Scouts

On Saturday 3^rd June, people from across Surrey will congregate at Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, to have fun attempting to beat the existing record for the world’s longest non-stop relay handshake.

Called Big Handshake, the event will attempt to beat a record set in 2020 by the Abu Dhabi Police. The existing official world record presently stands at 1,817 people, passing a handshake from person to person. It is therefore hoped that over 2,000 Surrey people will attend this fun event.

Entering and taking part is completely free, with an emphasis on having fun with families and friends. There will also be stalls and music, with all monies raised on the day being donated directly to Surrey Scouts, to enhance their facilities at Bentley Copse Activity Centre in Godalming.

Bentley Copse is used by young Scouts from across Surrey, to provide life-developing activities, with camping and dormitory accommodation for longer stays. Hundreds of groups of Surrey Scouts visit each year, and it can accommodate stays for up to 500 young people at a time.

At its heart though, is the development of confidence and life skills for young people.

Organised by Surrey Freemasons for Surrey Scouts, Big Handshake will help to pay for new adventure equipment and facilities at Bentley Copse, to help instil in them the teamwork, leadership and resilience skills that have helped past generations of Scouts to become everything from teachers, and social workers, to astronauts and Olympians. In fact, 11 out of 12 people who have walked on the moon were once Scouts!
