Big Give launches DEC Middle East match fund appeal

BIG Give has launched an appeal on its website to raise funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) response to the unfolding humanitarian disaster in the Middle East. In line with the wider DEC appeal that launched recently.

Right now, millions of people across Gaza, Lebanon and the wider region are in urgent need of food, shelter and medical care. Over the past year, conflict in the Middle East has devastated lives across the region, and millions have fled their homes in search of safety. In Gaza, the scale of needs is overwhelming. People are dying of hunger and diseases, as well as injuries caused by the conflict. In Lebanon, more than a million people have had to leave their homes in recent weeks. Shelters are overwhelmed, and hospitals are struggling to treat the thousands of people injured. Hundreds of thousands have crossed the border into Syria in search of safety.

Despite extraordinary challenges and risks, DEC member charities have proven that they are able to provide life-saving aid within Gaza. They are coordinating closely with each other and with local partner organisations to find ways to deliver vital humanitarian support, adapting their response to the rapidly changing situation. With the conflict escalating in Lebanon, causing massive displacement in an already fragile country, a DEC appeal is now more urgent than ever. DEC member charities are ready to act wherever the needs are greatest, and as the humanitarian crisis evolves across the region. This appeal is crucial to secure the necessary funds to support conflict-affected communities in Gaza, Lebanon, and the surrounding region where families have been displaced.

Big Give is the UK’s most successful match funding platform, whereby it multiplies public donations made to other charities and appeals. Match funding for this DEC appeal is being provided by The Reed Foundation and UK Aid Match, with calls for additional Champion funders to come on board in support of this emergency appeal.

Big Give has pioneered the concept of match funding – asking funders to match donations to charities made by members of the public. So £50 from an individual becomes £100 for a good cause after being doubled by a Big Give match funding ‘champion’ – typically philanthropists, foundations, or companies.

For the DEC Turkey & Syria Earthquake Appeal, which closed in March 2023, Big Give raised £2.21 million, and for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, which closed in June 2022, Big Give raised £3.56 million. Both totals include match funding.

DEC charities are on the ground saving lives right now, and they are ready to act wherever the needs are greatest. For more information on how and where DEC member charities are responding, please visit: www.dec.org.uk.

Alex Day, Managing Director for Big Give, said:

“Given the significant uplift in the impact our match funding capability has on any public donations, we urge anyone thinking about donating to the DEC appeal to do so via our efficient and effective platform. The situation in the region is desperate, and we really want to maximise the contribution of people’s generosity.”
