Charities receive a share of £27,800 giveaway

COMMUNITY groups from across the Yorkshire region have received a slice of a £27,800 charity giveaway, courtesy of the Freemasons.

Grants varying in size from £500 to £5,000 have been distributed to 14 worthy causes, including youth clubs, hospitals, theatres and specialist care centres from the Province of Yorkshire West Riding’s Provincial Grand Master’s (PGM) Fund.

Each year this fund – which has been supporting community organisations since 1987 – awards grants totalling £200,000. Nominees are selected by individual Masonic Lodges with grants presented four times a year.

Those to receive grants this quarter include:

  • The Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Team – located at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield – has been gifted £5,000 to provide furnishings for the new ‘bereavement suite’
  • Amy’s House, Handsworth, Sheffield, has been granted £3,000 to install items for Sensory and Integration Therapy to improve the environment for children with epilepsy, behavioural and severe learning disabilities whilst simultaneously providing support and breaks for their families
  • £3,000 has been given to the Leeds Society for Deaf and Blind people which endeavours to develop its centre into a social hub and is using the grant to purchase a Turbochef oven
  • Harrogate based CFR (Community First Responders) – a voluntary organisation assisting Ambulance service and medical staff – received £2,500 towards the purchase of 13 kit bags encompassing AED (automated external defibrillator) and medical items.
  • Friarmere Cricket Club (Junior Section) has been awarded £1,500, in order to replace its unserviceable outdoor net mats

David S Pratt, The Provincial Grand Master of the Province of Yorkshire West Riding, said: “Once again we are delighted to be able to support these 14 different organisations through to the PGM’s Fund.

“Each one of these nominees are fantastic organisations doing superb work within their local communities, and thanks to our members and lodges who contribute to this fund, we are able to support them financially.”

The Province of Yorkshire West Riding is based on the old West Riding, geographically ranging from Sheffield in the south to Ripon in the North and Goole in the East to Waddington in the West.
