Charity and midwife work in tandem for Dr Ted
A daredevil fundraiser has set herself a sky-high challenge to raise money for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity’s Dr Ted Children’s Appeal.
Student midwife Frances Gordon will be taking to the skies above Leeds with Skydive Hibaldstow on 19 May where she will take part in a tandem skydive from 15,000ft, freefalling for 60 seconds at 120 miles per hour.
The fearless 24-year-old, of Shirecliffe in Sheffield, hopes to raise as much money as possible for the Labour Ward at Rotherham Hospital where she has completed the training required for her BSC Midwifery course at Sheffield Hallam University.
“I really wanted to fundraise for the Trust’s charity to say thank you for all the amazing support I’ve had during my studies but to also leave a legacy behind which benefits patients in future,” she said.
“I’ve challenged myself to do something brave because I’m quite an adventurous thrill seeker. Although I don’t have a head for heights so it will definitely be a challenge for me!
“The women who use the Labour Ward at Rotherham Hospital praise it for being homely and welcoming. But we’re an ambitious team and we are always looking for ways we can improve the care we provide and the environment around us.
“I’m looking forward to hearing ideas from patients and colleagues about what equipment or resources the money I raise could be spent on to really make a difference to mums and their babies in future.”
The Dr Ted’s children’s appeal raises money to fund everything from toys to specialist medical equipment and resources to help ensure The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust’s youngest and most vulnerable patients, as well as their families, have the best experience of being in hospital as possible.
The appeal has raised £76,000 since it was set up in April 2012.
Barry Mellor, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “Taking on a sponsored challenge like a skydive can be a wonderful, life-changing experience as well as a great way to raise money for charity. We’re incredibly proud of all our student midwives, especially Frances who is determined to go the extra sky-high mile to help improve the lives of our patients and their babies.
“I hope as many people as possible, whether they are her colleagues, fellow students at Sheffield Hallam, friends, family or members of the public support her fundraising efforts. Frances is also our first ever official charity skydiver, so hopefully she will inspire others to do something daring for Dr Ted in future too.”
