Child poverty figures inspire footsteps for families

STATISTICS revealing the extent of child poverty across Yorkshire and the Humber have sparked action from a Yorkshire children’s charity.

Figures released last month by the End Child Poverty Coalition indicate 400,000 children (31 percent) across the Yorkshire region are living in poverty.

The alarming statistics have prompted action by The Principle Trust Children’s Charity which provides free respite breaks to children who are underprivileged, disadvantaged, disabled, have life-limiting conditions, or who have experienced poverty, trauma or abuse.

Staff and supporters of the North Yorkshire-based Trust will walk 400,000 steps, one for every child in Yorkshire experiencing poverty. Tackling a challenging 14-mile route or a more modest 7-mile option, on Saturday 19 August, supporters will stride out across The Yorkshire Dales, taking in iconic landmarks such as Malham Cove and Catrigg Force.

Since its launch in 2011, The Principle Trust has raised over £1m and provided respite breaks for more than 4700 children across the Yorkshire region. In response to the cost-of-living crisis, The Trust recently launched ‘Food for Families’, a £23,000 per annum initiative to provide an entire week’s supply of food and daily essentials for families taking a respite break with the charity.

Commenting ahead of the event, the Trust’s Events and Marketing Manager, Kerry Magson said:

“The latest data from The End Child Poverty Coalition reveals alarming levels of child poverty in our region. By taking ‘Footsteps For Families’ we aim to broaden awareness of the extent of child poverty and raise funds to support our ‘Food For Families’ initiative.”
