Children’s charity highlights need for perinatal awareness during Maternal Mental Health Matters Week
Aberlour Children’s Charity continues to increase awareness of Perinatal Mental Health throughout Maternal Mental Health Matters Week (30 April – 4th May), a time dedicated to communicating the importance of perinatal mental health.
Perinatal mental health is a term used to cover all mental health issues during pregnancy and the first year after birth, including anxiety, depression and psychosis related disorders. Maternal mental health issues are said to effect one in three mothers during pregnancy or in their child’s early years, costing the UK over £8 billion every year.
To help raise awareness of the often-untold distress surrounding perinatal mental health, Aberlour Children’s Charity have been running interactive sessions for workplaces and community groups, helping people learn what can be done to help pregnant women and new mums to maintain good mental health.
Liz Nolan, Assistant Director at Aberlour, said: “We’ve found that by working closely with corporations such as Barclays, we can have a positive impact on the understanding and awareness of maternal mental health. Not very often do we discuss such mental health issues, particularly in the workplace so by holding our perinatal awareness sessions we can work towards removing the stigma of talking about it among our colleagues.”
