Cot death charity hosts International Conference and develops touring play

The Scottish Cot Death Trust is hosting the International Conference on SIDS, Stillbirth and Baby Survival, 2018. This prestigious event comes to Glasgow on the 7th, 8th, and 9th June and is the annual meetings of the International Society for the Prevention of Perinatal and Infant Death (ISPID) and the International Stillbirth Alliance (ISA). This year, the conference will be held at Strathclyde University’s Technology and Innovation Centre.

#BabySurvival18 brings to together professionals from many agencies and disciplines who will share research, knowledge, and best practice in their respective areas.  They will also be joined at the conference by bereaved family members to exploring how bereavement services can improve.

“Our annual conferences are hugely beneficial for all involved. Professionals from different backgrounds learn so much from one another; shining a light on and discussing new themes and research can reduce the number of babies dying.  Families want to hear from experts – they want to know what is happening in research to understand further and prevent baby deaths. And the healthcare and third sector professionals want to hear from family members – how they can they improve their response and support when a baby dies. This event allows us to explore all of these areas” – Lynsay Allan, Executive Director, The Scottish Cot Death Trust.

It’s been a busy year for the Scottish Cot Death Trust. The charity has recently contributed to the production of a play exploring the effects of social isolation following the sudden death of a child. SCDT held a series of informal workshops with bereaved family members who shared some experiences about the aftermath of such a tragic event. These accounts were woven into a story exploring the humanity, humour, and isolation of everyday life. This project was primarily enabled thanks to a grant from the Big Lottery Fund in 2017.

Shattered was written by Lisa Nicoll and directed by Jordan Blackwood and is currently touring across Scotland. There will be a performance of the play for conference delegates on Thursday 7th June. For more information visit https://www.inmotiontc.co.uk/shattered
