Duo raise funds for Silence of Suicide charity in the Great North Run

In a remarkable display of determination and compassion, Steven Hayden and Stuart Carter took on the task of completing the Great North Run while raising an impressive £1635 for the SOS Silence of Suicide charity.

Stuart Carter had never run in a half-marathon before, with Steven having run his only one almost 10 years ago. Steven who had personally been touched by the loss of his cousin to suicide, and through friendships, has known others who have continued to suffer with such loss. Therefore, being advocates for mental health awareness, decided to take on the challenge and make a difference by raising funds and awareness of SOS Silence of Suicide.

The duo embarked on their 13.1-mile journey with determination and a shared goal in mind. Their months of rigorous training and endless dedication paid off as they crossed the finish line, cheered on by enthusiastic spectators and fellow runners.

Steven said:

“The connection between suicide and mental health is a key one, there are many people suffering and at risk of suicide and the work that SOS do to prevent, and support is a crucial one. Breaking the stigma of suicide, talking about it, and having that support to do this are several of the core aims of SOS and I was incredibly pleased to be able to support that.

“We are overwhelmed by the support we have received throughout this journey. It is heart-warming to witness the kindness and generosity of people who share our passion for mental health awareness, and it was a bonus to be able to say I participated in Sir Mo Farah’s last ever competitive race.”

The generosity of their supporters, friends, and family proved to be instrumental in their fundraising success. Through their collective efforts, Steven and Stuart managed to raise an impressive £1635, which will go a long way in supporting SOS Silence of Suicide’s vital work.

Stuart echoed Steven’s sentiments, added:

“Running the Great North Run was challenging, but knowing that we were making a positive impact on the lives of others made every step worthwhile. We are proud to have raised funds for SOS Silence of Suicide and hope to inspire others to take action.”

SOS extend their deepest gratitude to Steven and Stuart for their unwavering commitment and congratulate them on their incredible accomplishment in the Great North Run. Their dedication and selflessness serve as a reminder of the positive change that individuals can achieve when united for a common purpose.

The funds raised by Steven and Stuart will contribute to the ongoing initiatives of SOS Silence of Suicide, including educational programs, awareness campaigns, and support services. By raising awareness about mental health issues and combating the stigma surrounding suicide, the charity strives to create a society where individuals can seek help without fear or judgment.

SOS Silence of Suicide founders, Michael Mansfield KC, and Yvette Greenway-Mansfield expressed their gratitude to Steven and Stuart, saying:

“Their commitment to our cause is truly inspiring. The funds they have raised will enable us to continue supporting those affected by suicide and work towards preventing future tragedies. We are immensely grateful for their efforts.”
