Dyslexic Student Achieves Top GCSE Results Thanks to Schoolreaders Volunteer
TEN years ago, Lucy was a primary school student who struggled with learning to read, due to undiagnosed dyslexia. However, thanks to the support of a dedicated Schoolreaders volunteer named Liz, Lucy celebrated a triumphant success in her GCSEs, including achieving an impressive 9 (A*) in English Language. Now, she is on the path to university, with a bright future ahead.
Lucy recalls:
“Liz came in regularly and helped me to get through all of the reading levels.
“She would test my understanding of words, often shutting the book and asking me to recite a sentence back to her. I always struggled with that because I could never remember what I had just read, but she would always make sure I knew.”
The impact of Liz’s support extended into Lucy’s life beyond primary school. As Lucy prepared for her GCSEs, she found that the skills and confidence she had gained through those weekly reading sessions were instrumental to her success.
Lucy explained:
“Spending time with a Schoolreaders volunteer definitely helped me in my GCSEs. It still helps me now, because thanks to Liz, I feel much more confident.
“Having been diagnosed with dyslexia recently, I’m sure that the help I had at a younger age is what has allowed me to be so much further along with my reading now.”
Lucy’s achievements have set her on a path to pursue her passion for creative subjects, with university firmly in her sights. Her story is a powerful testament to the difference that one-on-one reading time with an adult can make in a child’s life.
Schoolreaders is a national charity dedicated to improving children’s literacy by providing free reading support in primary schools across the UK.
