Edinburgh Marathon: Football Fans’ bid to support Kinship Care Families
As part of the Edinburgh Marathon Festival on the weekend of 26/27 May, a Team of 30 Big Hearts Runners and Hearts Supporters aims to raise over £7,000 to support the most vulnerable Kinship Care families across Edinburgh.
Today Big Hearts Community Trust is proud to reveal the outstanding support from Hearts fans in improving the lives of Kinship young people and their carers, by backing Big Hearts’ ‘Emergency Essentials Fund’ which delivers crisis grants for Kinship Care families living in the capital.
The Big Hearts Team will see 30 Supporters take on the different races at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 2018 in a bid to collect over £7,000 in aid of Heart of Midlothian Football Club’s official charity partner.
Over a third of this target has already been secured by a small group of Big Hearts Volunteers who set up their own Fundraiser Event – the first of its kind for the charity – welcoming over 100 guests for a Race Night in the newly developed Main Stand at Tynecastle Park. The event was opened by Heart of Midlothian’s Chairwoman and Big Hearts’ Trustee Mrs Ann Budge who recognised the fantastic contribution from Hearts fans to support the Club’s charity.
The amount raised on the night will add to the individual fundraising efforts from the Supporters running under the Club and Charity badges during this bank holiday weekend.
Big Hearts created the ‘Emergency Essentials Fund’ early 2017, investing a five-figure sum to help Kinship Care families purchase essential households items such as cookers, washing machines or children’s beds. To date, over 66 families including 112 children have benefited from the Fund through £29,000 delivered by Big Hearts’ partner Buttle UK, a long established provider of crisis grants.
Caryn Kerr, Big Hearts’ Fundraising and Development Manager said:
“It’s such a fantastic outcome for our first Community Fundraiser set up by Big Hearts Volunteers and we are very grateful for their efforts to make this event a success, all this on top of their personal training for the Edinburgh Marathon Festival.”
“This week Big Hearts is expecting to receive over £7,000 through our Runners’ fundraising efforts. 100% of the donations will go to support some of the most vulnerable Kinship Care families in Edinburgh, via crisis grants delivered by our partner Buttle UK.”
“We created the ‘Emergency Essentials Fund’ as part of our Kinship Care Programme to offer an additional support for those who struggle to purchase essential households items, ensuring Kinship young people and their carers can maintain a comfortable and healthy family life.”
