Emmaus Cambridge selects charity of the year in show of solidarity
LOCAL homelessness charity Emmaus Cambridge is digging out its garden tools and supporting The Prospects Trust as its charity of the year for 2018/19.
The Prospects Trust supports adults, known as co-workers, who have learning difficulties, physical disabilities and those with varying health needs by offering supported day placements, training, and work experience opportunities on its 18-acre organic farm in Cambridge. All funds for the work of The Prospect Trust is raised through selling produce from the farm.
Emmaus Cambridge provides an alternative route out of homelessness for 34 people, known as companions, who are rebuilding their lives following periods of homelessness. The local charity provides a home for as long as needed in its community in Landbeach and meaningful work in its second-hand charity shop, coffee shop, and newly completed community garden.
The charity, which sells second-hand furniture, clothing, and household goods, is kicking off its support with a dedicated solidarity sale on Saturday 29 September in its charity shop and said:
“All funds raised on the day will be donated to the trust as unrestricted funds. As charity of the year, The Prospect Trust will also receive help from two Emmaus companions and one staff member each month to work with co-workers.
“One of the most important parts of the Emmaus Cambridge ethos is solidarity; meaning to help someone less fortunate than yourself. We are committed to regular acts of solidarity, which shows Emmaus companions that everyone has the capacity to make a difference to the lives of others.”
Mark Cornwell, Farm Manager at Prospect Trust, said:
“We have been overwhelmed with the support form Emmaus Cambridge. We are a similar enterprise in many ways and share the same kind of work ethic and ethos. Both charities involved will get something out of the relationship, which is great.”
