Fundraiser does a world of good for charities

Colleagues, fundraisers and volunteers at Rotherham Hospital united on World Parkinson’s Day to raise awareness and funds for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity’s Purple Butterfly Appeal and Parkinson’s’ UK.

The fundraising team baked cakes and goodies, held a tombola and sold hand-made crafts and cards in Community Corner at Rotherham Hospital to mark the global awareness day. The event was led by The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust’s Parkinson’s Disease Nurse Specialist Joanne Rose and raised £700 during two days of fundraising on 10 and 11 April.

Joanne said: “World Parkinson’s Day on 11 April is a date my colleagues and I as well as our patients have really been looking forward to because it’s a great opportunity to reach out to more people affected by the condition, to boost funds for vital research into better treatments and to raise awareness about the services and support available to people in Rotherham.

“The event was also an opportunity to talk about my role and the support we offer as a Trust. We’re incredibly lucky to have a dedicated Parkinson’s nurse at Rotherham Hospital because it means patients with the condition are identified quickly and offered support to help them through their stay in hospital and when they return home.

“It’s been a wonderful few days – colleagues and members of the public have been so generous and we’ve spoken to people with Parkinson’s who haven’t accessed our services and support before.

“We’re also really proud to support the Charity’s Purple Butterfly Appeal and to help play our part in raising money for a fourth Purple Butterfly room at Rotherham Hospital.”

The Purple Butterfly Appeal raises money to fund Purple Butterfly rooms, which provide privacy, dignity, space and a home-from-home for patients, their families, friends and carers.

The purpose-built rooms offer privacy and dignity to patients nearing the end of their lives, and their families. The money raised goes towards funding the building works, specialist equipment and facilities for loved ones to stay plus a television, fridge, microwave and a kettle.

Rotherham Hospital currently has three Purple Butterfly rooms, located on Ward A2, Fitzwilliam Ward and the Labour Ward.

Barry Mellor, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “Thank you to everyone who supported our Purple Butterfly Appeal and World Parkinson’s Day fundraising event. It’s really rewarding to see colleagues, volunteers and patients working together to raise awareness and funds for charities which we really believe in.

“The money raised for the Charity’s Purple Butterfly Appeal, which supports end of life care at Rotherham Hospital, means we are one step closer to realising our ambition to create a fourth Purple Butterfly room at Rotherham Hospital.”
