Fundraisers spring into action for Purple Butterfly Appeal

Spring was in the air at Rotherham Hospital when volunteers, crafters and the Easter bunny joined forces to raise £562.49 for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity’s Purple Butterfly Appeal.

The Charity hosted a Spring Fair at Rotherham Hospital with a host of stalls offering delicious baked goodies, books, plants and hand-made crafts. Unison Rotherham collected dozens of scrumptious Easter eggs for a tombola and raffle prizes were donated by generous members of the public, colleagues from The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, Boots and the hospital’s resident florist, Floral Design.

Craft activities were on offer and children were transformed into butterflies and spiders, thanks to face painter Zoe Hulbert, an Activities Organiser at Bunnings in Rotherham.  The Easter bunny also made an appearance alongside youngsters from St Bernard’s Catholic High School, who had collected chocolate treats for youngsters on the Children’s Ward.

Gabby Atmarow, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “The Purple Butterfly Appeal is a cause which is really close to our hearts at the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity so we were thrilled to see so many volunteers, fundraisers, colleagues and patients supporting our Spring Fair.

“Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered their time, baked cakes, knitted beautiful Easter chicks or baby blankets and donated lovely things for our raffles and tombola. We could not have raised so much without your generosity.”

The Purple Butterfly Appeal raises money to fund Purple Butterfly rooms, which provide privacy, dignity, space and a home-from-home for patients nearing the end of their lives, their families, friends and carers.

The money raised goes towards funding the building works, specialist equipment and facilities for loved ones to stay plus a television, fridge, microwave and a kettle.

Rotherham Hospital currently has three Purple Butterfly rooms, located on Ward A2, Fitzwilliam Ward and the Labour Ward.

Gabby added: “We are incredibly proud to be able to offer Purple Butterfly rooms to patients nearing the end of their lives and their families because they really do provide the space and privacy families need when time is most precious. The money raised at our Spring Fair means we’re one step closer to realising our ambition to install a fourth Purple Butterfly room at Rotherham Hospital.”
