Gabby Logan joins children from Great Ormond Street Hospital to launch Race for the Kids 5K fun run
TV Presenter Gabby Logan joined patients from Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), their families and employees from Royal Bank of Canada to officially launch this year’s RBC Race for the Kids fun run this week, in Hyde Park which will raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
Gabby met GOSH patients Amelie, 13, Rowan, 10, Arthur, 9 and Lily, 8, who are all taking part in this year’s inclusive 5K fun run with their families to mark a very special milestone in their treatment and to say thank you to GOSH for the care they have received. All four children have recently rung the ‘end of treatment bell,’ following years of treatment at the hospital. Today they joined former international gymnast Gabby Logan to mark the countdown to this year’s RBC Race for the Kids ahead of them taking part in the event in Hyde Park, on Sunday 13thOctober.
One of the patients that Gabby met was 10-year-old Rowan who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a type of cancer, three years ago, after he collapsed in his mother’s arms outside the family’s GP surgery. He was admitted to GOSH and has been having intense chemotherapy for the last few years. In the last few months, Rowan has also faced a life-threatening diagnosis of sepsis at home, caused by a problem with his tooth, and he was rushed back to GOSH for emergency treatment. Despite his condition, Rowan and his family have always taken part in RBC Race for the Kids but this year are aiming to recruit a super team of 100 people, to mark Rowan’s milestone of finishing his treatment.
Gabby Logan said: “It was amazing to meet such an inspirational group of children today and to start the countdown to this year’s RBC Race for the Kids fun run. I’ve supported Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity for a number of years and have taken part in the event with my own two children before so I know what a special day it is. It really is a fun run that anyone can take part in and I would urge everyone to sign up!”
Supported by Royal Bank of Canada for the ninth year running, this year’s race is expected to be bigger than before, helping to raise even more money for seriously ill children. Suitable for all ages and abilities, the inclusive fun run will see children, parents, grandparents and even dogs run, walk, scoot, wheel or jog around the accessible 5k course to raise vital funds for GOSH. Participants can join individually or in teams, taking in beautiful views of Hyde Park as they go, and with activities and a family festival to enjoy after the race, it’s a great day out for all.
Tim Johnson, Chief Executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity said: “RBC Race for the Kids is a very special event and we’re really looking forward to hosting our inclusive fun run in London’s iconic Hyde Park for the second year. I would encourage everyone to join us on Saturday 13th October and to either jog, walk or wheel their way around the course and enjoy the fantastic family festival after the race. All the money raised really does make a huge difference to seriously ill children from across the UK.”
