Hospice celebrates its Mini Marathon 10th Anniversary this Spring

Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice celebrates ten years of its much-loved Hospice Mini Marathon this spring, taking place on Sunday 14th of May at Royal Greenwich Park.

Last year, 750 children and their families completed the Mini Marathon, receiving their eco-friendly Hopsice Mini Marathon medal and JLL Goody Bag. This year, the event is set to be even bigger and better.

One little boy who particularly loves to participate in the event is nine-year-old Tayden Matthews from Plumstead. Having taken part in the Hospice’s annual running event for half his life, this year will be his fifth time. Last year Tayden also won the best costume competition, having dressed up as a surgeon to raise awareness for the NHS and show how important it is.

Each year, Tayden runs the Hospice Mini Marathon in memory of his grandad, Terrence, who was supported by Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice to die at home when Tayden was just four years old. Tayden still cherishes his fond memories with his grandad and remembers him as being ‘really fun’.

Tayden said:

“I think that first of all, running the Hospice Mini Marathon was about Grandad, but then I think about all the other people who need support from the hospice and all the people that use the hospice.”

When asked if he’d recommend the event to other children, he said:

“Yes, do it. It’s really fun, and you support loads of people, and I really like the medal you get at the end too.”

The Hospice Mini Marathon is open to children aged between 5 and 16 years old, and they can choose whether to walk, jog or run the 2.62 miles around Royal Greenwich Park.

The Hospice Mini Marathon will be a fun day out with all the family. There will be live performances, fun warm-ups, fancy dress and a medal for completing the fun run. There are only 1000 spaces, so be sure to book your child’s place or find more information at https://www.communityhospice.org.uk/support-us/events/hospice-mini-marathon/.

Greenwich & Bexley Community Hospice is committed to making sure patients and their families are not alone when facing a life-limiting illness. The money raised through taking part in the running event will allow the hospice to continue doing this. Any money raised will make a huge difference to patients, families and carers.
