Iconic Porsche from hit TV show The Bridge sold for £125,000 for WaterAid
The iconic car belonged to the show’s main protagonist, the beautiful and enigmatic homicide detective Saga Norén. The fourth and final series of the critically acclaimed Swedish/Danish language drama has just finished airing on BBC Two.
Sofia Helin, who starred as Saga Noren, is an ambassador for WaterAid, which works in some of the world’s poorest countries to improve access to clean water and good sanitation. Earlier this year, she went to see WaterAid’s work in Cambodia, where one in four people lack access to clean water, while over half the population has nowhere safe to go to the toilet.
Sofia said:
“I’m so happy that Saga’s dear Porsche could raise so much money for such a good cause. I’ve seen first-hand what a wonderful job WaterAid does in improving access to clean water and decent toilets globally, and the money will really help transform lives for people in some of the world’s poorest communities.”
Imported to Sweden from San Francisco in 2009, the Porsche is finished in Jäger Grun – an olive green – and became one of the programme’s undisputed stars.
According to Sofia, the car takes a bit of getting used to. She added:
“They offered me extra driving lessons before driving the car and at first I refused as I could already drive and had a one-year-old baby so didn’t want to waste time on lessons, but after having a go in the car, the lesson proved incredibly useful!”
The car was sold for more than four times its original estimate of £30,000.
Tim Wainwright, Chief Executive at WaterAid, said:
“We were very excited to see Saga’s Porsche do so well at auction and really grateful that the proceeds from the sale of the iconic car will help support WaterAid’s work across the world. It costs just £15 to provide one person with clean water, so the money raised really will help transform lives.”
The proceeds of the sale are donated to WaterAid by Filmlance International and Nimbus Film in association with SVT, DR, ZDF German Television Network, ZDF Enterprises, Film i Skåne, NRK, Copenhagen Film Fund, Lumiere Group, Stiftelsen Ystad-Österlen Filmfond, with support from Nordvision and in co-operation with Malmö Stad.
Lars Blomgren, Anders Landström and Bo Ehrhardt, Creators of The Bridge said:
“We are very happy that The Bridge will finish its successful UK journey with the sale of Saga Norén’s Porsche and that we are able to donate the money to a cause as important as WaterAid.”
The car was offered at Bonhams Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale.
