Iron woman’s 140-mile charity challenge
An adventurous management accountant from Scunthorpe will be swapping the cold and rain of the North-East of England for the searing heat of Hawaii to compete in next month’s Iron Man World Championship.
Gemma Scott, who works for the 2Sisters Food Group, will take on the 140-mile challenge of cycling, swimming and running to raise funds for National Children’s Charity the Boparan Charitable Trust and to raise awareness of female competitors in the sport.
No stranger to immense challenges, to date Gemma has completed 36 marathons, 1 ultra marathon, 7 triathlons and 4 Iron Man competitions. The most recent of which was completed in Nice back in June, which allowed Gemma to qualify for the World Championship Iron Man in Hawaii. Gemma will compete against 3,500 other female athletes from around the world, but the level of female competitors at normal events is usually less than 10% of the male athletes.
Gemma explained:
“Normally there are less than a few hundred female competitors at events, due to issues like cost and the pressure of finding time to train. I have been running and competing for over a decade and would encourage anyone to reach for the stars and chase their dreams.”
The inspirational adventurer is also hoping to raise vital funds to support the work of the Boparan Charitable Trust, as they help to transform the lives of children with disabilities, life-limiting conditions and those in extreme poverty.
Gemma said:
“I learned about the work of the Boparan Charity through my work, it is truly amazing how they enhance and help to change young lives. It is my hope that any amount raised will go to help change the lives of disadvantaged children across the UK. I hope that I can be a role model for the young children.”
Gurpa Singh 2SFG Scunthorpe Site Director said:
“Everyone at the factory is behind our Gemma, she is amazing and we urge everyone to get behind her fundraising.”
Gareth Aston, Director of the Boparan Charitable Trust said:
“We are blown away that Gemma has chosen to support and raise funds for the Boparan Charitable Trust, through this truly epic adventure and undertaking.”
