Law firm shortlisted for fundraising achievement

LEADING Solihull law firm QualitySolicitors Davisons has been shortlisted for the Outstanding Corporate Social Responsibility Project award by Solihull BID Awards following a year-long fundraising campaign for Bowel Cancer UK.

Firm director Darryl Wilkes spearheaded the campaign, inspired by his father who was diagnosed with bowel cancer in June 2017. Through a series of fundraising initiatives, QualitySolicitors Davisons surpassed the original donation target of £5,000 to raise an impressive £8,000.

Alongside other fundraising events, including a gala evening and charity quiz night, Mr Wilkes pushed his physical limits by taking part in Ironman Wales on 9 September where he swam, rode and ran a vast 140 miles. Mr Wilkes completed the course in just over 13.5 hours, placing him in the top half of competitors.

“Ironman Wales was one of the toughest challenges I’ve done, so it was incredibly heart-warming to see how many people dug deep to show their support,” Mr Wilkes said.

“Bowel Cancer UK is a charity close to my heart having seen my father receive a bowel cancer diagnosis, go through lots of treatments and an operation at the end of 2017 from which he thankfully recovered.

“The work they do is life-changing for thousands of people across the country, which is what inspired me to run the year-long fundraising project and kept me motivated all the way to that finish line.”

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and the second biggest killer. Around 268,000 people in the UK are living with bowel cancer; someone is diagnosed every 15 minutes.

Bowel Cancer UK Director of Fundraising Luke Squires said the fundraising campaign was warmly welcomed.

“We are so grateful that Darryl is raising funds for us by taking on this amazing and gruelling challenge,” Mr Squires said, adding “Darryl’s support, commitment and determination means that Bowel Cancer UK will help save more lives and improve the quality of life of everyone affected by bowel cancer.”

Solihull BID Award recipients will be announced at a dinner ceremony on Thursday, 22 November. Those still wanting to donate to QualitySolicitors Davisons’ fundraising campaign for Bowel Cancer UK can do so by visiting justgiving.com/fundraising/darrylironman.
