Magic tricks and ward visits a treat for Mayor of Rotherham
The Mayor of Rotherham helped to spread a little magic at Rotherham Hospital during his first official visit to celebrate his support for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity’s Dr Ted children’s appeal.
The Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Alan and Sandra Buckley, were invited to attend a tour of the hospital’s Children’s Ward, Children’s Outpatients Department and the Special Care Baby Unit where they met some of the Trust’s youngest patients and the dedicated colleagues who care for them.
They were joined by the Charity’s children’s entertainer Magic Tom whose awe-inspiring card games and magic tricks were a real treat.
All the money raised during Cllr Buckley’s Mayoral year will help the Charity to continue to provide resources, specialist medical equipment and the added extras which make children smile during their stay in hospital.
Cllr Buckley said: “The Mayoress and I were really proud to be invited to Rotherham Hospital to meet some of the Trust’s youngest patients and their families as well as the caring and dedicated staff who look after them.
“We saw some of the toys, resources and equipment which the Charity has already funded, such as Magic Tom’s visits. We also spoke to staff about what difference our support could potentially make to children in future.
“As a Mayor’s Charity, I am pleased to shine a light on the Dr Ted children’s appeal during the next year, and our visit has really inspired us to help raise vital funds and awareness to support its wonderful work.”
The Dr Ted children’s appeal has raised £76,000 since it was set up in April 2012. Examples of what the charity has funded include:
- Games and sensory toys for the Children’s Ward, Children’s Outpatients and the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre
- Colourful, child friendly wheelchairs
- A child-friendly quiet saw to help remove plaster casts from broken bones
- Specialist sleep apnoea monitors for new-borns on the Special Care Baby Unit
Barry Mellor, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “It was a real honour to show the Mayor and Mayoress around the hospital and to showcase some of the resources and equipment the Charity has funded thanks to the generosity of fundraisers and donors.
“I’m sure that with the support of the Mayor and Mayoress we can really inspire fundraisers throughout the region to participate in exciting events and activities. All the money raised will really help to improve the experience some of our youngest patients and their families have during their hospital stay.”
