Marie Curie Chief Executive to step down

Dr Jane Collins, Chief Executive of Marie Curie has announced that she will step down from the role in Spring 2019.

In a message to staff, informing them of her decision, Dr Collins said:

“During my time at Marie Curie I have been impressed and humbled by the incredible work that you do. I am also very proud of our progress. From our successful rebrand to the introduction of our Information and Support Service, new research and care programmes, and significant improvements we have made to the quality and safety of care we provide.

“We have directly supported more people, and changed the lives of even more by influencing governments, health and social care decision makers on the importance of quality end of life care. Thanks to the incredible work of our Fundraising teams, we have also managed to get out of deficit. I am confident that we are in a great place and now is the right time for me to step down.”

The charity’s Chairman Vindi Banga told Charity Today:

“I would like to thank Dr Jane Collins for her total commitment and excellent contribution during her tenure as Chief Executive. She will leave Marie Curie significantly stronger both operationally and financially; and having broadened its support beyond cancer patients to those with other ailments as well.”

Dr Collins joined Marie Curie as Chief Executive in September 2012. Before that, she was Chief Executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children for 11 years, having previously been medical director of the hospital. Dr Collins was also the Chief Executive of the Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

Dr Collins holds a number of roles outside Marie Curie, which includes being trustee at the King’s Fund.  She is also the co-chair of the Ambitions in End of Life Care Group, a member of the Cicely Saunders Institute Advisory Council, the Palliative Care Leadership Network and is a member of the HELIX Centre of End of Life Care Steering Committee.
