Mayor makes his fundraising debut at Rotherham Hospital

Patients, their families and colleagues from The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust were invited to share cakes, goodies, competitions and raffle prizes with Dr Ted and the Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Alan Buckley.

The Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity played its part in supporting the Mayor’s Appeal by hosting a bake sale, raffle and competitions at Rotherham Hospital on 21 September.

The event raised £439.24 which will be split between the Mayor’s good causes – the Charity’s Dr Ted children’s appeal, the Fire Fighters Charity and Headway Rotherham.

Cllr Buckley said: “Being the Mayor of Rotherham has so many highlights but the Mayoress and I are particularly enjoying supporting our chosen charities and good causes.

“We were delighted to be invited to the Dr Ted fundraiser at Rotherham Hospital and it was really good fun encouraging people to treat themselves to some delicious cakes and to enter the raffle and competitions.

“It’s wonderful to know that a portion of the money Sandra and I helped the Charity to raise will be spent on resources and equipment which will make youngsters smile during their stay in the hospital.”

The Dr Ted’s children’s appeal raises money to fund everything from toys to specialist medical equipment and resources to help ensure The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust’s youngest and most vulnerable patients, as well as their families, have the best experience of being in the hospital as possible.

The appeal has raised £77,500 since it was set up in April 2012. Examples of what the charity has funded include:

• An entertainer and magician to help make youngsters on the Children’s Ward smile
• Games and sensory toys for the Children’s Ward, Children’s Outpatients and the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre
• Colourful, child-friendly wheelchairs
• A child-friendly quiet saw to help remove plaster casts from broken bones
• Specialist sleep apnoea monitors for new-borns on the Special Care Baby Unit

Top raffle prizes provided were kindly provided for the event by Jump INCflated, Nandos, Wacky Warehouse and Toby Carvery in Rotherham.

Barry Mellor, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “Thanks to everyone who baked treats, bought raffle tickets or entered competitions at the Charity’s Dr Ted fundraiser. We were especially proud to see the Mayor and Mayoress volunteer their time to help us raise such a fantastic amount.

“I’m sure the Mayor has inspired others to fundraise for Dr Ted and we have some exciting plans for how we could potentially invest any money raised into resources and equipment which will benefit our youngest patients.”
