Mental health charities set to merge in the new year

TWO leading mental health charities, Lambeth and Southwark Mind and neighbouring Bromley, Lewisham and Greenwich Mind are planning to merge in the new year.

The new, larger organisation will offer an extensive range of mental health and dementia services across the five London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Bromley, Lewisham, and Greenwich. The services currently provided by both charities will not be affected, and service users will continue to be supported after the merger has been completed on 01 January 2024.

As part of a network of over 100 local Minds across England and Wales, the charities have shared values and are already used to working well together. Since 2021, their teams have been working together to support hundreds of people who have lost loved ones to suicide and have worked alongside shared partners such as South London and Maudsley NHS Trust to deliver a range of high-quality services.

As one single organisation, the larger team will continue to work towards their common goal – to be there when it matters for people experiencing mental health problems.

The merged mental health charity is expected to support over 11,500 people in its first year. However, this move creates huge potential to open doors to even more life-changing mental health services at a time when more support is needed than ever before, with one in four people experiencing a mental health problem of some kind each year.

Ben Taylor, Chief Executive of Bromley, Lewisham, and Greenwich Mind will drive the organisation into this new chapter and is excited about the opportunities that the merger will bring: ‘Joining forces with Lambeth and Southwark Mind will be positive for everyone involved. We firmly believe that merging will create a stronger organisation, meaning that we can reach a growing number of people and ensure they receive the support and respect they deserve.’
