Multi-lap marathon raises over one thousand pounds for young carers

The Black Pear Joggers, a friendly running club in Worcester, recently donated a whopping £1,145 to West Mercia charity YSS to support young carers in the county.

YSS, an independent charity with more than 30 years’ experience, supports some of the most marginalised people in society and has successfully delivered Worcestershire Young Carers since 2003. Worcestershire Young Carers supports young carers aged between seven and 25 years old who care for a parent, guardian, grandparent or sibling due to illness, disability, physical or mental health difficulties or substance misuse. As well as assessments, one to one support and signposting, Worcestershire Young Carers runs monthly clubs and activities ranging from visiting the theatre to going tobogganing.

Senior keyworker at YSS Worcestershire Young Carers, Neil Phillips, met with the fitness group to collect the cheque and thank the group in person for their brilliant donation. Chris Bagient-Reed, a member of the Black Pear Joggers, said: “We raised the money by asking for sponsorship to take part in the ‘Wild One’ race, which takes place every July. It’s a multi-lap marathon that can be completed individually or as part of a team. This is the second year we’ve chosen to support Worcestershire Young Carers and we’re delighted to be able to do so. It’s a vital service that provides much-needed support for young carers, including the rare opportunity to relax, socialise with peers and have fun away from their caring roles. We’re only too happy to support such a worthy cause.”

Lorraine Preece, Chief Executive at YSS, said: “We’re so grateful to everyone at the Black Pear Joggers for their fantastic support. Their amazing donation will help us to provide a wide variety of clubs and activities for the 400 plus young carers we support every year. Thank you!”
