ONS volunteers hold a Datadive to help charities

FOR the second year running around 40 staff from Titchfield’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) held a Datadive event to help charities better understand their data.

In partnership with Datakind charity and Southampton University, ONS ran the hackathon-style event to help the homelessness charity Shelter and Parkinson’s UK. Both charities were partnered with ONS data scientists, statisticians, analysts and developers to use data to gain insight into their programs and the communities they serve.

The volunteers used population projections and Parkinson’s prevalence rates to understand how the growth in the prevalence of Parkinson’s affects provisions for health and social care. Meanwhile, volunteers pulled together Shelter’s data, and information about other housing and homelessness service provisions, to model and prioritise the best possible interventions to deliver the most impact.

Event organiser Alessandra Sozzi, ONS told Charity Today:

“As an organisation that specialises in producing reliable statistics, these events are a great opportunity to use our professional expertise to help organisations make sense of the data they hold and ultimately provide better services.”
