People’s Powerhouse announces details of its next convention
The People’s Powerhouse, the movement which aims to widen decision-making across the North to include a more diverse range of people and experiences, has announced further details of its next People’s Powerhouse Convention, taking place on November 20 in Bradford.
Speakers at the ‘People are the Powerhouse’ event will include Tony Walsh, Longfella Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, Neil McInroy, Executive Director of CLES; Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council and chair of West Yorkshire Combined Authority and People’s Powerhouse Chairman Edna Robinson who is also chair of Big Life Group and Trafford Housing Trust.
Edna said: “The focus of the event will be on showing ways more people with a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences can influence decisions made in the North, and how decisions affecting the North will be stronger as a result. We need meaningful engagement at all levels of decision-making in the North.
“People’s voices aren’t loud enough and the decisions affecting their lives and communities are made by too narrow a group of people, with far too narrow a range of experiences. And that’s not a good thing if we are serious about creating a North that works for everyone.”
Tracy Fishwick, MD of Transform Lives Company based in Liverpool and instrumental in launching the People’s Powerhouse movement said: “We are creating a space where people share what’s working in communities across the North. Anyone can host their own workshop or run a short inspiration session, we’re getting lots of interest already and are keen to hear as many voices as possible”
All sections of the community are encouraged to contribute, including local people, public sector, voluntary, community, civic leaders and businesses – small and large. There are two different ways to get involved. Contributors can provide a ‘7 Minute Inspiration’ – a soapbox opportunity to showcase something they are doing, something they want to challenge, or an idea that they need support with. Alternatively, more in-depth, hour-long interactive sessions are available, for an audience of up to 50 people.
The People’s Powerhouse was founded in February 2017, other influential members of the steering group include IPPR North Director Sarah Longlands, Jo Miller, Chief Executive of Doncaster Council, former chief prosecutor Nazir Afzal OBE and Ed Cox, Director of Public Services and Communities at the RSA.
Hosting the event at the Northern Commercial Stadium in Bradford is a deliberate way of widening the debate to encompass views from across the North of England, and to value places that can be overshadowed by neighbouring cities. Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Bradford Council leader and chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, said: “This event is being held in our city because Bradford’s success is key to the success of the Northern Powerhouse. Bradford is perfectly located, in the heart of the north of England with a great mix of rural and urban settings. We firmly believe, therefore, that the North can only be successful if Bradford is successful. This conference is the opportunity to make sure all people’s voices are heard at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse agenda.”
Together with Bradford Council and social investor UnLtd, a drop-in event will take place on 27 September in Bradford for local groups and people who might have creative ideas, want to get involved and help make the November event a success. Community groups are asked to contact sophie@transform-lives.org for details.
The People’s Powerhouse event takes place on 20 November 2018 from 10am- 4.30pm at the Northern Commercials Stadium in Bradford. For more information on the event and to register to attend or host a workshop session visit:www.peoplespowerhouse.org.uk
