Praise for local hospital as family fundraises over £10,000

Praise for local hospital as family fundraises over £10,000

THERE was a double celebration for 4-year-old Mathilda.

For the last year, she has been having treatment for cancer at Whipps Cross Hospital and Great Ormond Street. But recently, Mathilda got to ‘ring the bell’ on the children’s Acorn Ward at Whipps Cross to celebrate the end of her treatment.

Mathilda’s family began fundraising a month ago to thank the staff on Acorn ward. Yesterday the family, from Aldersbrook, E12, presented a cheque for over £10,000 to Barts Charity, the dedicated charity for Whipps Cross and the other four Barts Health NHS Trust hospitals.

Barts Health sees over 100,000 children and young people living in East London each year, making them the largest provider of children’s services in London.

Mathilda’s Mum Jenny says:

“Mathilda has been receiving treatment at Whipps Cross for a year – chemotherapy and steroid treatment. The team here have been phenomenal, not just administering the medicine but caring for us as a family. This was a chance to give back a little bit, and we’re thrilled with the amount we’ve raised.

“Great Ormond Street is a world-class hospital, and as such we have received world-class treatment for which we are so grateful, but we feel that it is important also to sing the praises of Whipps Cross and other local units which offer families such as ours the chance to receive high-quality treatment close to home. The level of care, professionalism and support we have received has been right up there with GOSH.”

“I would like to add our thanks personally to Dr Andrea Leigh and especially to Kristy Mckeon, Oncology Specialist Nurse, who has supported us so much this year.”

The funds will be used by doctors and nurses on Acorn ward to transform an unused room into a relaxing space for children to have chemotherapy and transfusions.

Whipps Cross Consultant Paediatrician Andrea Leigh who is leading the project says:

“We’re so grateful to Mathilda’s family and to everyone who has donated, for raising such an astounding amount of money to transform an unused space into a comfortable treatment area so that children receive treatment in an appropriate environment.”

The family still have fundraising events planned including a raffle, so please donate to support your local children’s ward: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/acornward.
