Sense launches Box Hill Super Climb: Your elevation, your challenge
A new cycling event where riders will set their own target for the number of times they tackle an iconic hill climb is being launched by a charity to raise vital funds for its work supporting people with complex disabilities.
The Box Hill Super Climb, taking place on Box Hill in Surrey on Sunday 22 September, is thought by its hosts, the national disability charity Sense, to be the first open elevation challenge where cyclists will challenge themselves by setting their own elevation target.
Participants will take on the popular Zig Zag climb, which rises 116 metres over 2.5km (1.5 miles) to a viewpoint at the summit, before turning around, cycling back downhill and starting the circuit again.
The road, which challenged competitors at the Summer Olympics 2012, will be closed to traffic during the fundraising event. There will be around 150 cyclists of all levels, ranging from enthusiasts to beginners looking for a fun and stimulating day out. Whether a cyclist completes one hill rep or 30 or anything in between, everyone is welcome to take part.
Participants will be supported by the charity throughout the day, with plenty of food and entertainment as well as a team of masseurs on hand to help with any niggles. Supporters will line the road, creating a ‘Tour de France’ vibe as they cheer on riders throughout the event.
Cyclists will normally be aged 18 plus, although teens aged 16 or 17 can sign up if they ride alongside an adult. Disabled participants are welcome to use a power-assisted bike or a hand-pedal bike.
Sense’s Head of Events and Community Fundraising, Caroline Buckland, said:
“Sense wanted to launch a new fundraising event that would be open to cyclists at any level and challenge everyone no matter their ability. The Box Hill Super Climb will do exactly that – and we believe it’s unique and the first open elevation challenge where you set your own target.
“Every rider will be supporting a fantastic cause by raising money for Sense. Their efforts will ensure our charity can continue to improve the lives of children and adults with complex disabilities and make sure no one is left out of life.
“How many hill reps can you do?”
