Social Media fundraiser established for Missing People Helpline
UK charity Missing People has launched a social media campaign to raise awareness and funds for their 24/7 helpline.
Almost 1,000 people are reported missing in the UK every day. Missing People is the only charity dedicated to reuniting loved ones, and providing free and confidential expert advice and emotional support by phone, text or email 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, to anyone affected by the issue of missing. The charity uses every means possible to appeal for missing adults and children, whilst providing vital on-going support to those left behind.
The charity has launched a new initiative called Raise 116, encouraging supporters to use newly available Facebook tools to raise funds needed to ensure a highly skilled advisor is at the end of the line in moments of crisis.
Paul Joseph, Head of Helplines at Missing People said: “This is a really exciting way of raising awareness of our vital helpline as well as funds needed to keep it going. We’re asking people to set up their own Facebook fundraising page, with a target of £116 and try to reach it by 11thJune. £116 could help take 19 calls from people in distress, whether they are away from home themselves, or struggling to cope with the disappearance of a loved one. The issue is one that can affect anyone, unexpectedly, so it’s important that we offer an easy to remember 6 digit number for them to call. We understand from listening to families that they see us as a lifeline during what is an incredibly unique experience, so we need to make sure we continue to be here for them 24/7.”
Last year the number of calls to the helpline by children and young people increased by 115%, and 26% by vulnerable adults. In 2017, Missing People was awarded Helpline of the Year by Helplines Partnerships.
