Summer garden party serves up fundraising boost for local sensory charity
A local charity supporting thousands of people in the Forth Valley with sensory loss put the fun into fundraising with a summer garden party and raised more than £1000 for its vital work.
Forth Valley Sensory Centre (FVSC) organises the annual event to raise funds and celebrate its work with the community and the people it supports.
The day, held at the charity’s Camelon hub, raised £1351, which will go towards running events, activities and support for people in Falkirk, Stirling and Clackmannanshire, who are blind, partially sighted, deaf and hard of hearing.
The event boasted fun activities, including a mini golf course and sponge splat game, with staff bravely volunteering to get soaked, a bottle stall, a craft stall and a tombola.
FVSC included information stands from partner organisations including the Macular Society, Falkirk Health and Social Care Partnership Sensory Services Team and Living Well Service, National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) and walking charity, the Braveheart Association.
Delicious food and homemade mocktails were served up for £3 per person, supported by Asda in Grangemouth, Stenhousemuir and Falkirk.
FVSC also launched its summer hamper raffle, with kind donations from centre users and Caesar and Howie, Solicitors for Older People. Tickets will be on sale at the centre until August when the draw for the winner will be made. The hamper raffle will be drawn on August 23, and tickets can be bought up until the day of the draw.
FVSC has supported people with sensory loss and their families who live in central Scotland, including Stirling and Clackmannanshire, for more than 15 years.
It acts as a community hub, offering support, advice, practical help, and social opportunities.
The centre has around 20,000 visitors every year and is funded by a mix of statutory funding and donations.
Stephen Smith, who is both a volunteer and uses the centre himself, said:
“The event was well attended and I was happy to come along. I really enjoyed the activities, especially the sponge splat game as well as seeing all the stalls and speaking to the attendees and volunteers on the day. The sun even came out for us, making the day even more enjoyable.”
FVSC community fundraiser Rowan Ferguson said:
“Our Garden Party was a huge success and I would like to thank everyone who came along, donated and volunteered. This is the third summer event I have hosted here at FVSC and it has been the best one yet, thanks to the hard work put into the event by volunteers, staff and centre donations. We aimed to raise £750 from this event and on the day our total was an amazing £1351.51 which is nearly double our expectations.
“I would like to say a special thanks to the Community Champions at Tesco Camelon as well as Asda Grangemouth, Stenhousemuir and Falkirk for their generous donations to our buffet as well as supporting us on the day, also a special thanks to Caesar and Howie Solicitors for their donation of two hampers towards our raffle. We hope everyone enjoyed the event as much as we did and hope to welcome you all back for our annual Winter Fayre on Friday, November 29 – save the date.”
