Trustee will undertake gruelling cycle challenge for charity

JOHN Horton, a paramedic volunteer with the Essex-based immediate care charity, BASICS Essex Accident Rescue Service (BEARS) and trustee of BASICS, is undertaking a three-day cycle challenge to celebrate 45 years of voluntary pre-hospital care schemes in the eastern region.

The BEARSycle Challenge will see John use an elliptical bike as he travels 120 miles across East Anglia over the course of 20^th, 21^st and 22^nd September. His planned route will take him to other immediate care schemes, also passing the BASICS headquarters in Ipswich. 

His journey will start with the Norfolk Accident Rescue Service (NARS) on the Snetterton Racing Circuit before leading him to the Suffolk Accident Rescue Service (SARS) base in Woolpit, Suffolk. He’ll then finish the day by visiting the BASICS HQ in Ipswich. On the 21^st, he plans to cycle the 33 miles to the BEARS base at Notley near Braintree.

From here, his third day will be a 30-mile journey to The Kings Head at High Beech near Loughton where the BEARS Anniversary Gala Event will be taking place.

On discussing the challenge, John Horton explained; “I’ve worked with BEARS for 8 years and have seen the vital work they do, providing immediate medical care to the Essex area alongside the Ambulance Service.

“Many in the area haven’t heard about our scheme, nor about our lack of government funding, so I want to do something to make people aware of our work while raising some much-needed funds.”

John continued; “It is also a great chance to highlight the hard work of neighbouring schemes along with The British Association for Immediate Care (BASICS), the organisation supporting and connecting similar schemes across the UK.”

BEARS have been working alongside the East of England Ambulance Service in Essex for 45 years, supporting medics by attending to critically ill or injured patients. The charity receives no government funding and all responders are medical professionals who volunteer in their spare time.

The charity is part of BASICS, an organisation who has championed the development of pre-hospital emergency medicine since 1977.
