UK’s Heart Heroes honoured at star-studded ceremony during UK Charity Week
THE red carpet was rolled out for celebrities from the worlds of showbiz, TV, and sport at London’s Bloomsbury Ballroom during UK Charity Week for British Heart Foundation’s (BHF) Heart Hero Awards. The BHF’s seventh annual awards ceremony celebrated the remarkable bravery and resilience of individuals who have gone above and beyond to support others while facing the challenges of heart and circulatory diseases.
Stars including David and Frankie Seaman, Ollie Proudlock, British Olympic gymnasts Becky and Ellie Downie, and football legend David Ginola joined the celebrations. Former England and Arsenal footballer Jack Wilshere was also in attendance to cheer on his daughter Sienna, one of three young heart heroes recognised on the night.
The star-studded event, hosted by TV presenter and DJ Yinka Bokinni, highlighted the inspiring stories of fundraisers, CPR lifesavers, and those living with heart conditions. Yinka, who herself has a heart condition, described hosting the ceremony as a privilege.
She said:
“It was a privilege to host the BHF’s Heart Hero Awards and help shine a light on all the inspirational people who play an important part in helping the BHF fund their lifesaving research and make a difference to so many lives.”
Inspiring Stories and Remarkable Achievements
The awards recognised individuals like Elliot Awin, who was surprised on stage by best friend Ollie Proudlock with the Hero of the Year Award. Elliot, who has Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome, became the first person with a pacemaker to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, raising tens of thousands for the BHF.
Reflecting on his journey, Elliot said:
“My heart condition might have changed the course of my life, but I would never have rowed across the Atlantic if it hadn’t been because of it. I hope my story inspires others to pursue their goals regardless of challenges.”
Other highlights included the recognition of Ann Hartly and Brian and Ruth Thurtle, whose decades of fundraising have contributed an extraordinary combined total of over £430,000 in support of the BHF’s mission.
Their dedication exemplifies the spirit of UK Charity Week, which aims to spotlight incredible charitable achievements nationwide.
A Poignant Evening of Celebration
In addition to celebrating inspiring individuals, the ceremony paid tribute to the 12 families who supported the BHF’s Till I Died campaign, trusting the charity with the memory of loved ones lost to sudden cardiac arrest. The evening concluded with uplifting performances by singer Ines Rae and Matt Green, The Rapping Scientist before Heart Heroes joined members of S Club on stage for the afterparty finale.
BHF Chief Executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths said:
“The Heart Hero Awards are the highlight of my year. They shine a light on the inspiring people who raise vital funds, campaign for change, or lead BHF-funded research. Their dedication helps us save and improve lives at a time when the BHF has never been more needed.”
