VIDEO: England International is inspiring people with learning disabilities
Liverpool FC Women’s star Gemma Bonner met with people with learning disabilities and autism to inspire them to find confidence ahead of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.
The England International shared tips on finding self-belief with a look back at her career, and the importance of trying new things, with people supported by leading social care charity, Community Integrated Care online. Through a Q&A and exercise including a ‘World Cup Warm Up’, this aimed to build excitement ahead of a Lionesses’ World Cup game.
Having previously supported the charity’s International Women’s’ Day initiatives, Gemma gave her support again through this special workshop on www.What-To-Do.co.uk – a ground-breaking website created by Community Integrated Care that provides free experiences every week for people who access care and support.
Sharing her experiences from an outstanding career that has seen her represent the Lionesses, Manchester City and Liverpool FC, her broadcasting work in media, and insights into stars to watch out for at the World Cup, Gemma’s footballing memories and knowledge inspired participants to set their own goals for the future, from finding new hobbies to joining a local sports team.
Speaking to Charity Today, Gemma said:
“I was delighted to support Community Integrated Care’s work in enabling people with learning disabilities to live their best lives possible. Their What To Do website is so impressive and such a valuable resource for anyone who accesses social care.”
“We had brilliant chats about finding confidence, the benefits of trying new things and the importance of having people around you that support you – such as your teammates. I learned a lot too and was thrilled to hear that many more people will be tuning in to watch the World Cup and cheer on the Lionesses.”
Lewis Webster, Sports Inclusion Communications Manager at Community Integrated Care, witnessed the value that Gemma’s inspiration brought to the group, said:
“We can’t thank Gemma enough for sharing her story, from first kicking a ball as a child, to going on to represent her country, Gemma gave participants an insight into the highs and lower points of her career, and how even the smallest improvements and changes you make in life can have a massive difference.”
“She engaged amazingly with people we support, taking the time to relate her successes and find ways for the participants to find their own, no matter how big or small, which really helped the group consider their own dreams and aspirations. A leader on and off the pitch that aligns with our charity’s values, we’re immensely proud to have Gemma’s support.”
