Young carers receive a lesson in lifesaving
The fifth annual Summer Appeal from social care charity, Quarriers, is now underway thanks to generous donations from kind-hearted individuals across Moray.
Young Carers supported by Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) are amongst young people across North East Scotland benefiting from donations and recently, a group of 12 young carers from Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) visited RNLI Buckie Lifeboat Station where they were given a personal tour around the base and shown a lifeboat by the welcoming crew.
The young carers, ranging from nine to 16 years old were taught about the inner-workings of this vital service and the role played by the brave individuals who volunteer.
As it was the crew’s training evening, the youngsters got the chance to chat with the crew as well as the opportunity to try on some of the gear, including life-vests.
There are several events planned throughout the summer for young carers in Moray including trips to the seaside, picnics, harbour walks and outings to the cinema, and more. The days out funded by the Summer Appeal are open to all young carers registered with the service and youngsters choose which days out they would like to go on.
These activities provide a chance for youngsters who have care responsibilities for family members, be that parents, grandparents or siblings, the chance to put aside their worries and obligations and have a day to make memories and have fun with other young people.
Sandi Downing, Project Manager at Quarriers Carer Support Service (Moray) said: “Young carers supported by this service often take on responsibilities and concerns way beyond what’s expected for their age. Having time out to be a child makes such a difference, and they really look forward to our activity programme. We are very grateful to everyone to who has donated to the Summer Appeal so far, helping us make this possible every year.”
A gift of £15 will provide one child with a day out, and donations of any amount are welcome. Supporters can make a contribution by visiting www.quarriers.org.uk/summer-appeal
